Luxury vs. Standard Desert Camps: Which Sahara Experience is Right for You?
When planning a trip to the Merzouga dunes, the most important decision you’ll make (after choosing your guide!) is where you’ll sleep. In the Moroccan Sahara, you generally have two choices: Standard (Traditional) Berber Camps or Luxury Desert Camps.
At Sahara Horizons, we want you to have the trip of a lifetime. To help you choose, we’ve broken down the key differences between the two.
1. The Sleeping Arrangements
Standard Camp: These are authentic and simple. You usually stay in a traditional tent made of dark wool (Goat or Camel hair). You’ll have a real bed and blankets, but the tents are closer together, and the space is cozy.
Luxury Camp: Think of this as a boutique hotel in the sand. These tents are much larger, often with wooden floors, high ceilings, and beautiful Moroccan decor. You get king-sized beds, premium linens, and total privacy.

2. Bathroom & Shower Facilities (The Big Difference)
Standard Camp: Bathrooms and showers are located in a separate, shared block outside your tent. It’s clean and functional, but you’ll need a flashlight for a midnight walk to the toilet!
Luxury Camp: Every tent has a private, ensuite bathroom. This means a flushing toilet, a sink, and a hot shower right inside your tent. For many travelers, this is the reason they choose luxury.

3. Dining and Atmosphere
Standard Camp: Dinner is served in a communal "Big Tent" where all travelers eat together. It’s a very social atmosphere, great for meeting people from other parts of the world.
Luxury Camp: The food is often more gourmet, featuring multi-course Moroccan tagines and salads. You can choose to eat at a private table under the stars or in a beautifully decorated dining tent.

4. Location and Quietness
Standard camps are often grouped together in areas that are easier to access. Luxury camps are usually tucked further into the dunes of Erg Chebbi, offering a deeper sense of silence and "desert magic."
5. Price vs. Value
Standard is perfect for backpackers, students, or those who want the most rugged, traditional experience.
Luxury is highly recommended for couples, honeymooners, or families who want to enjoy the Sahara without "roughing it."
The Verdict: Which should you choose?
If you can afford the upgrade, we always recommend the Luxury Camp. The Sahara is a once-in-a-lifetime destination; having a hot shower and a private bathroom after a long camel trek makes the experience much more relaxing.

⭐ Pro Tip: Even in Luxury camps, the desert gets cold at night from November to February. We provide plenty of blankets, but bring warm pajamas
