2-Day Zagora Desert Tour from Marrakech — Atlas Mountains, Draa Valley & Desert Camp

Experience the Zagora desert in 2 days from Marrakech. Cross the Atlas Mountains, visit Ait Benhaddou, ride a camel at sunset & sleep under the stars. From €99/person.

Not every traveler has three days for the desert — but that doesn't mean you have to miss it.

The 2-day Zagora desert tour from Marrakech is the perfect solution. In just two days and one night, you'll cross the High Atlas Mountains, walk through a UNESCO World Heritage kasbah, drive through one of Morocco's most spectacular palm valleys, ride a camel into the desert at sunset, sleep under a sky full of stars at a traditional desert camp, and return to Marrakech the following evening.

It's one of the most rewarding short tours in all of Morocco — and at Sahara Horizons, it's one of our most loved experiences.

Why Choose the Zagora Tour?

It's closer. Zagora is approximately 365 km from Marrakech — a 5–6 hour drive compared to 8–9 hours for Merzouga. That means more time experiencing the desert and less time in the vehicle.

The Draa Valley is extraordinary. The route south of Ouarzazate passes through Morocco's longest river valley — a breathtaking ribbon of ancient kasbahs, traditional Berber villages, and a vast palm oasis stretching as far as the eye can see. This landscape alone makes the journey worth it.

It fits short itineraries perfectly. Depart Day 1 morning, arrive for sunset camel trek the same evening, wake up to a desert sunrise Day 2, and be back in Marrakech by evening. Clean, efficient, and unforgettable.

It's ideal for first-time desert visitors. If this is your first Moroccan desert experience, Zagora is a wonderful introduction — authentic, beautiful, and without the very long drive of the far south.

Day-by-Day Itinerary :

Day 1 — Marrakech → Ait Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Draa Valley → Zagora Desert Camp

7:00 AM — Departure from Marrakech

Your driver picks you up from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. The journey south begins immediately as you head toward the High Atlas Mountains — one of the most dramatic road crossings in North Africa.

9:00 AM — Tizi n'Tichka Mountain Pass (2,260m)

Cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, Morocco's highest paved road at 2,260 metres above sea level. The drive winds through remote Berber villages, argan forests, and breathtaking rocky mountain scenery with sweeping panoramic views. Your guide points out traditional mountain architecture and explains the culture of the Amazigh (Berber) communities who have called these mountains home for millennia.

10:30 AM — Ait Benhaddou Kasbah

Arrive at Ait Benhaddou — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most iconic sights in all of Morocco. This ancient fortified village of towering red clay pisé has stood for centuries along the old trans-Saharan caravan route and has served as a backdrop for some of Hollywood's most famous productions: Gladiator, Game of Thrones, The Mummy, and Lawrence of Arabia, among many others.

Walk through the narrow lanes with your guide, climb to the top for panoramic views over the Ounila Valley, and hear the fascinating history of this extraordinary place.

12:30 PM — Ouarzazate

Continue to Ouarzazate — Morocco's "African capital of cinema" — for a lunch stop at a local restaurant (not included, ~€8–12). If time allows, a brief stop at the famous Atlas Film Studios, one of the largest outdoor film studios in the world, is possible (optional additional cost).

2:00 PM — The Draa Valley

Begin the most spectacular stretch of the entire journey. The road south of Ouarzazate enters the Draa Valley — Morocco's longest river valley, stretching over 200 km toward the Sahara.

The valley is an extraordinary sight: a dense ribbon of ancient palm trees, mud-brick kasbahs, and traditional Berber villages running through the ochre desert landscape. Massive earthen fortresses line the road — many still inhabited by Berber families whose ancestors built them centuries ago. Your guide explains the history of this ancient corridor, once the main route for trans-Saharan gold and salt caravans traveling between Timbuktu and the Mediterranean.

3:30 PM — Agdz

Pass through the traditional town of Agdz, nestled at the entrance to the Draa Valley. A brief stop here offers a glimpse into authentic southern Moroccan life away from the tourist circuit.

5:30 PM — Arrive at the Desert Camp near Zagora

Check in to your desert camp on the edge of the dunes near Zagora. Step out of the vehicle and feel the shift — the silence, the space, the warm desert air. Your first view of the desert landscape stretching toward the horizon is one you'll carry with you for a long time.

Freshen up before the main event of the evening.

6:00 PM — Camel Trek at Sunset

Mount your camel and ride out into the desert dunes as the sun begins to descend. The 1.5-hour camel trek takes you through the golden landscape with time to stop, admire the panoramic desert views, and take photographs in the extraordinary evening light.

Your guides find the perfect dune for watching the Zagora sunset — the sky turning shades of deep orange and pink over the desert, the silence broken only by the sound of the wind.

7:30 PM — Welcome Tea with Local Nomads

Return to the camp and relax with traditional Moroccan mint tea prepared by local nomads — a genuine moment of Saharan hospitality.

8:30 PM — Dinner & Berber Music Evening

A generous traditional Moroccan dinner is served at the camp — tagine, couscous, fresh salads, and Moroccan bread. As the evening deepens and the temperature drops, a Berber music performance begins around the campfire. This is one of those rare travel moments that feels completely real and completely magical at the same time.

After the music, step away from the campfire and look up. With zero light pollution, the Zagora night sky is extraordinary — thousands of stars visible to the naked eye.

Overnight: Traditional desert camp near Zagora

Day 2 — Desert Sunrise → Ait Benhaddou → Atlas Mountains → Marrakech

6:00 AM — Desert Sunrise

Wake before sunrise and return to your dune from the evening before. Watching the Saharan sunrise — the first light catching the tops of the dunes, the landscape shifting from deep blue to gold — is one of the most beautiful natural spectacles Morocco has to offer. Bring your camera.

7:00 AM — Camel Trek Back & Breakfast

Ride the camels back to the camp for a traditional Berber breakfast — fresh bread, honey, olive oil, amlou (Moroccan almond paste), and mint tea.

8:30 AM — Departure for Marrakech

Begin the return journey north through the Draa Valley, passing the same magnificent landscape in the early morning light — often even more beautiful than the afternoon before.

11:30 AM — Ait Benhaddou (Second Stop)

If you didn't have time to fully explore Ait Benhaddou on Day 1, this is your opportunity. Alternatively, your guide can suggest other stops along the return route based on your interests.

1:00 PM — Lunch Stop

Stop at a local restaurant near Ouarzazate or in the Atlas Mountains (not included, ~€8–12).

2:30 PM — Return via Atlas Mountains

Cross back over the High Atlas Mountains, now seeing the landscape from the opposite direction. The afternoon light on the mountain peaks is stunning.

6:30 PM — Arrive Back in Marrakech

Your driver drops you off at your hotel, arriving approximately 6:30 PM — leaving your evening free.

Distance :~365 km 🟢.                  ~560 km

Drive time. ~5–6 hours.                  ~8–9 hours

Time needed : 2 days ✅.           3 days minimum

Draa Valley : ✅ Included.        ❌ Different route
