3-Day Sahara Desert Tour Marrakech to Merzouga | Camel Trek & Luxury Camp | Sahara Horizons
The ultimate 3-day Sahara tour from Marrakech to Merzouga. Cross the Atlas Mountains, visit Ait Benhaddou, ride a camel at sunset & sleep in a luxury desert camp
3-Day Sahara Desert Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga — Atlas Mountains, Erg Chebbi & Desert Camp
If there is one experience that defines Morocco for travelers who have made the journey — it is this one.
The 3-day Sahara desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga takes you from the vibrant red city of Marrakech across the dramatic High Atlas Mountains, through ancient kasbahs and a canyon carved by millennia of water, into the heart of the Moroccan Sahara — where the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise up to 160 metres above the desert floor.
Two nights in the desert. A camel trek at sunset. A night sky with no light pollution. A Sahara sunrise from the top of the dunes. Berber music around the fire. This is the full experience — and at Sahara Horizons, we've designed every detail of it carefully.
This is Morocco's most iconic journey. And it lives up to every expectation.
Why Choose the Merzouga Desert Tour?
Erg Chebbi is the real Sahara. The dunes near Merzouga are among the most spectacular in all of North Africa — towering orange and gold mountains of sand that shift and reshape with every desert wind. There is nowhere else in Morocco quite like it.
The route is extraordinary. The journey from Marrakech to Merzouga passes through some of the most diverse and breathtaking landscapes in the country — mountain passes, rose valleys, dramatic gorges, ancient kasbahs, and fossil-rich desert towns — before arriving at the dunes. The road itself is part of the experience.
Three days is the right amount of time. Enough to fully decompress from city life, spend a real night in the desert, witness both sunset and sunrise over the dunes, and return to Marrakech feeling like you've genuinely crossed into another world

Day-by-Day Itinerary :
Day 1 — Marrakech → Atlas Mountains → Ait Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Valley of Roses → Dades Gorges
7:00 AM — Departure from Marrakech
Your driver picks you up from your hotel or riad in Marrakech as the city is waking up. Head south immediately toward the High Atlas Mountains — within 30 minutes the urban landscape gives way to the first dramatic foothills.
9:00 AM — Tizi n'Tichka Mountain Pass (2,260m)
Cross the highest mountain road in Morocco at 2,260 metres above sea level. The drive winds through remote Berber villages, dramatic rocky switchbacks, and sweeping panoramic views over the Atlas range. Your guide explains the culture and history of the Amazigh (Berber) communities who have lived in these mountains for thousands of years. Stop at the top for photos — the view is extraordinary.
10:30 AM — Ait Benhaddou Kasbah
Descend from the mountains to the legendary Ait Benhaddou — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Morocco's most famous kasbah. This ancient ksar of towering red-clay pisé has stood at the crossroads of the trans-Saharan caravan route for centuries and has appeared in some of Hollywood's most iconic productions: Gladiator, Game of Thrones, The Mummy, Prince of Persia, and Lawrence of Arabia.
Walk through the narrow lanes with your guide, climbing to the summit for panoramic views over the Ounila River valley below. The history and scale of this place is genuinely impressive.
12:30 PM — Ouarzazate
Continue to Ouarzazate — Morocco's "Hollywood of the Desert" and the gateway to the Sahara — for a lunch stop at a local restaurant (not included, ~€8–12). Your guide can point you toward the Atlas Film Studios (optional visit, additional cost) — one of the largest outdoor film studios in the world, where many of the productions filmed at Ait Benhaddou also used interior sets.
2:30 PM — Valley of Roses (Vallée des Roses)
Head east through the Vallée des Roses — named for the thousands of Damascus rose bushes that bloom across the valley each April, producing the fragrant rose water and essential oils that Morocco exports worldwide. Even outside rose season, the valley is beautiful — a lush green corridor of traditional Berber villages, terraced gardens, and ancient earthen kasbahs against the backdrop of the Jebel Sahro mountains.
4:30 PM — Dades Gorges
Arrive at the spectacular Dades Gorges — one of Morocco's most dramatic landscapes. The gorge is famous for its extraordinary rock formations nicknamed the "Monkey Fingers" — twisted columns of red rock shaped by millions of years of erosion. The view from the road above is breathtaking.
6:30 PM — Check In & Dinner
Check in to your hotel in the Dades Valley, overlooking the gorge. Enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner at the hotel restaurant before an early night — Day 2 starts early.
Overnight: Comfort hotel in the Dades Valley
Day 2 — Dades Gorges → Todra Gorges → Erfoud → Rissani → Merzouga → Camel Trek at Sunset
8:00 AM — Breakfast & Departure
After breakfast, continue east toward the Sahara. Today's drive takes you through increasingly dramatic desert landscapes as you approach the far south.
9:30 AM — Tinghir Oasis & Todra Gorges
Arrive at the Todra Gorges — one of Morocco's greatest natural wonders. The gorge cuts through the rock for several kilometres, but it is the entrance section that takes your breath away: two sheer canyon walls rising over 300 metres straight up from a narrow river bed, with only a narrow strip of sky visible above.
A guided walk through the base of the gorge is included — the scale of the rock walls above you is extraordinary, and the light changes dramatically throughout the day as the sun moves across the narrow sky above.
11:30 AM — Deep Desert Road to Merzouga
Continue south through increasingly arid landscapes as the last traces of green disappear and the full desert reveals itself. Pass through Tinjdad, Erfoud (famous for its ancient fossil markets — the Saharan rock here is rich in trilobites and ammonites millions of years old), and Rissani — one of the most important historic towns in southern Morocco, the ancient capital of the Tafilalt region and the birthplace of Morocco's royal Alaoui dynasty.
2:30 PM — Lunch Stop
Stop for lunch at a local restaurant near Erfoud or Rissani (not included, ~€8–12).
4:00 PM — First View of Erg Chebbi
As you approach Merzouga, the landscape transforms dramatically. The flat desert plain gives way suddenly to a wall of enormous golden dunes rising on the horizon — Erg Chebbi, one of the most spectacular natural sights in all of Africa.
This is the moment many travelers say stops them in their tracks. Nothing prepares you for the scale and beauty of it.
4:30 PM — Check In at Your Desert Camp
Settle into your luxury desert camp at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Your tent is furnished with proper beds, quality bedding, and everything you need for a comfortable night — this is genuine luxury in the desert, not roughing it.
Freshen up before the main event.
5:30 PM — Sunset Camel Trek into Erg Chebbi
Mount your camel as the sun begins its descent toward the desert horizon. Your Berber camel guide leads you out into the dunes of Erg Chebbi — weaving between the towering orange and gold mountains of sand as the light changes every few minutes.
The camel trek takes approximately 45–60 minutes into the dunes, with a stop at a high point to watch the full desert sunset. The colors are extraordinary — the dunes turn from gold to deep orange to copper to purple as the sun disappears below the horizon.
This is the moment that defines the tour. Photographs will never fully capture it.
7:00 PM — Welcome Tea Under the Stars
Return to camp as the desert sky fills with stars. Sip traditional Moroccan mint tea with your Berber hosts as the temperature drops and the silence of the Sahara settles around you.
8:00 PM — Dinner & Berber Music Evening
A generous traditional Moroccan dinner is served in the camp — tagine, couscous, fresh salads, and Moroccan bread, all prepared at the camp. As the evening deepens, a live Berber music performance begins around the campfire — drums, traditional instruments, and the voices of the desert. This is one of the most atmospheric and authentic moments of the entire journey.
After the music, step away from the fire and look up. Erg Chebbi has near-zero light pollution — on a clear night, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye and the number of stars is genuinely overwhelming. Many travelers say this alone was worth the entire journey.
Overnight: Luxury desert camp in Erg Chebbi, Merzouga
Day 3 — Sahara Sunrise → Breakfast → Return to Marrakech
6:00 AM — Sahara Sunrise
Wake before dawn and climb to the top of the dune behind your camp. Watching the Sahara sunrise — the first pale light on the horizon slowly building to a blaze of gold that catches the highest dune crests while the valley below is still in shadow — is described by almost every traveler who witnesses it as one of the most beautiful natural experiences of their lives.
Bring your camera. Bring a warm layer. Take your time.
7:00 AM — Camel Trek Back & Breakfast
Ride the camels back to the camp edge for a final traditional Berber breakfast — fresh bread, honey, olive oil, amlou (Moroccan almond paste), and mint tea — with the dunes still glowing in the morning light behind you.
8:30 AM — Departure from Merzouga
Begin the return journey to Marrakech via a scenic alternative southern route through Alnif and Kelaat M'Gouna, offering ever-changing desert and mountain panoramas. Your guide shares stories of the region's history, geology, and Berber culture during the drive.
12:30 PM — Lunch Stop
Stop for lunch at a local restaurant en route (not included, ~€8–12).
2:00 PM — Ait Benhaddou (Optional Return Visit)
If you'd like to see more of Ait Benhaddou than Day 1 allowed, or if the afternoon light creates a better opportunity for photography, your guide can arrange a brief return stop here.
7:00–8:00 PM — Arrive Back in Marrakech
Your driver delivers you back to your hotel, arriving in the early evening with your Marrakech night completely free.
